For this week's 'Meet the Team' features one of our newest assistants, Jessica! When I first interviewed this girl, I was blown away by some of her work. I always talk about how important it is to surround yourself with the best-of-the-best and when bringing together my team, it is also equally important to see the potential that each person has to grow. Jessica is an artist who is growing exponentially. She has an extremely unique perspective and I love what she creates during a shoot!

Q. What is your role in the Photogen Inc. Crew?

Assistant. I assist.

Q. How did you begin working for Photogen Inc?

Facebook. I met Eliesa briefly when I was working as a photo intern a few years ago and so I followed the Photogen Inc Facebook page a bit. Last fall Eliesa had a posting regarding a need for more assistants and we set up a meeting and here I am.

Q. What does it mean to be an assistant?

To be an assistant means to back up the head photographer. Sometimes I'm uploading files to a hard drive, holding a light or tracking down a missing something or someone. As an assistant, I also get to do a lot of shooting. A lot. I get to focus on details and try to capture things that might get missed by a photographer who works alone. I'm another set of eyes.

Q. How has being a part of this crew helped you as an artist?

Being a part of Photogen Inc has given me the chance to meet a ton of photographers I wouldn't have met otherwise. Being a part of a community of artists allows me to communicate with , learn from & be challenged by others. It's amazing.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting?

My favorite thing about shooting is that it creates another excuse to explore new places. Walking around a new space with a camera, I slow down and look at everything we don't always see. It's a great time to slow down. I also love telling people that I went out and did some shooting over the weekend and 90 percent of the time they think I've developed an interest in guns. That's fun.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

Ok. Things I love in life, besides photography, may include but is not limited to: avocados, unnecessary punctuation, running, my collection of cowls made by my mom (hi mom), sleeping in tents (also known as camping), coffee (I would marry it if I could, no lie), live music and books.

Q. How did you start out being a photographer?

I think my first interest in photography stemmed a little bit from my love of music. I would show up to a concert three hours early just to get in the front row with my Kodak Advantix camera. I started taking photography classes in high school and college, had an internship with Metro Magazine which after a few years, led me to Photogen Inc.

Q. What do you think you bring to this team?

I hope to bring a different perspective and another mind to challenge the stereotypes and basic ideas of wedding photography.

Q. What are you looking forward to the most for the 2011 season?

This year I'm really looking forward to hanging out with this fabulous collection of people. I'm also looking forward to finding my place in this industry and working toward developing a solid style and just learning as much as I can.
