Personal

Where am I?

Taking time for myself is a very precious thing that I haven't done enough of lately. My days are filled with taking care of my clients, mentoring my crew + the community, editing, sending images off to art directors, planning, shooting, grocery shopping, cleaning, cooking, dog-walking, loving, WHEW! Some days I feel like I wear multiple hats, all of which I absolutely love. About a month ago, I really felt like I just needed some time. Time to myself, to totally disconnect from my everyday environment and away from the daily grind. I also felt like I needed to step away from my digital camera for a bit. My work is my passion and I know that I am SO lucky to do what I do. However, at the end of the day, taking photographs is still my job and even though I LOVE what I do, there are moments when I really just don't want to pick up my camera. I feel like it is my responsibility to bring myself back to why I am a photographer and why I am an artist.

My way of 'finding' myself again through this wee bit of a rut is to be in a new space and shoot film. Many of you know that I adore film and to be honest, it is the one element of photography that brings me back to why I take photographs in the first place. I love the process of film, but especially, the unknowns.

In this digital world we live in, everything is so fast, predictable and controllable. You know from the instant you take an image what it will look like. To be quite frank...I've become bored with it, which is why I have needed this time.

I chose to come to Seattle, for two reasons. 1) I love the Pacific Northwest. 2) I have some lovely friends up here who continue to keep me grounded and uplifted as an artist. You might have heard of these two ladies Sara Montour and Sarah Rhoads. I spent some brief time with both of these girls and it was absolutely renewing for me. I laughed harder than I have in a long time and have had some of the best conversations about love, life, and the pursuit of being the artist I know I can be.  I am so lucky to have friends like this in my life who I know I can always count on to be real with me.

I have a couple days left here in Seattle and then we'll be back to our normal programming...in the mean time, here are some fabulous photos, courtesy of Ms. Montour's cell phone!

Oooh la la!

Ahhhhh, shit! I've been wanting to get some new photos of myself for a long while now, specifically for the blog and website! I think it's good to update your photos every few years and freshin' up things a little bit around here!

I started to think about who I would want to take these photos and the same girl kept coming to mind. She's incredibly talented - and a no bullshit kind of girl, which I absolutely love. Above all though, I knew I needed a photographer who's images would exude a feel that I wanted to be 'my image' for clients to see...Angelica Glass was the only woman for the job!

Getting these images done was SO much fun! I got all made up by the lovely Erica Flamm and all styled up as well! I always feel like blog images should be super fun as well - and why not go all out?

We shot yesterday in NYC and I am thrilled with the few images Angelica has posted already! If you want to be inspired, make sure to check out Angelica's blog!

A HUUUUUUGE thank you to Angelica for the rockin' photos, they are perfect!

We are Invincible!

So, last night, I went to the John Mayer concert. It. Was. Amaaaaaaaazing! For some reason, whenever I am at concerts, the lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks and I have these big realizations about life, love and business!

The last song Johnny sang is called 'No Such Thing' and as the song started, my friend Erin (who I went to high school with, but we were never friends-until-after-high-school-sort-of-thing) said to me, "Wow, Eliesa, think of how far you have come..." I didn't know what he meant by that, I mean, yeah, I have a successful business and I love what I do, but he's on a fantastic journey of his own through school, why would he say that?

The lyrics go something like this:

"Welcome to the real world", she said to me Condescendingly Take a seat Take your life Plot it out in black and white Well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings And the drama queens I'd like to think the best of me Is still hiding Up my sleeve

They love to tell you Stay inside the lines That something's better On the other side

I wanna run through the halls of my high school I wanna scream at the Top of my lungs I just found out there's no such thing as the real world just a lie you've got to rise above

So the good boys and girls take the so called right track Faded white hats Grabbing credits Maybe transfers They read all the books but they can't find the answers And all of our parents They're getting older I wonder if they've wished for anything better While in their memories Tiny tragedies

I am invincible (x3) As long as I'm alive

and suddenly it hit me...we are living in a completely different world now.

I am also reading this fabulous book called Linchpin by the one-and-only Seth Godin and it talks all about this new world we are living in. His major point is how we have all been trained to think that our lives are suppose to go a certain way. We go to school (which is very structured), continue on to college, graduate, and go on to work for a company who will determine how much money you make - but alas - they will give you health insurance and really 'take care' of you. We've been raised to think that this process is the way to happiness.

Yesterday I also had a conversation with a friend who told me her father just got laid off from his job and he is having to face a world that he never thought he would have to learn. The world of computers. Her father literally has to go back to take classes to learn about the internet, because that is THE only way to apply for a job. It's not easy for my friend to see her father, who she has always envisioned as a strong leader to be back at the level of a 5 year old - and I am sure terribly aggravating and frustrating for him to be back at square one when he is 'suppose' to be enjoying these years.

As the song above was playing, I kept thinking about the book, my conversation with my friend and the comment that Erin just made about how far I've come and the BIG realization I made was that in other people's eyes, I have constantly gone against the grain. I have always done the opposite of what I was 'suppose' to do and I most definitely did not take the easiest route to get where I am. But I believed in myself, in my craft and in my dream. To other people, I have not just built a business, but I have shown other people that following your dream and being successful at is IS A REALITY!

The world that we are in now is not structured and safe. It is essential for everyone to look inside themselves and figure out how to be indispensable - to be sooooo good at what you do that people can not look away! There is no longer the guarantee of health insurance or a high paycheck out of grad school. This doesn't mean that I think everyone should go and start their own business, just because I did, but whoever you work for - it is still up to you to 'seize-the-day"! Think out of the box, challenge others, get creative and be a leader in everything you do.  I'm a big believer the our mindset and world views are going to need to change in order to adapt to the new, fast world as-we-know-it.

There are no longer rules - get use to it and enjoy it.

Embrace the change.

With this new world comes new opportunities for you.

What are you going to do?

Travel Whirlwind!

I'm in the midst of the 'slow season' - WAIT, let me re-phrase that. I'm suppose to be in the 'slow season', but things are anything but slow around here! Just an FYI to all of my clients and blog readers...I'll be embarking on a bit of a travel whirlwind for the next three weeks! On the roster is a NYC Engagement Session, Mexican Wedding and the yearly mecca to Las Vegas for WPPI!

Along the way I will be seeing a TON of friends and (hopefully) have some time to blog about it all!

MN Photostars!!

MN Photostars!!!! What is this, you say? It's a little group I put together back-in-the day with the uber-awesome Sara Montour, who has since moved to Seattle! Our vision was to create an environment for the raddest photographers from Minnesota to just get together, have fun, grab a beer and chill! We hosted a few of these, but since Sara moved, I kind of put it on the back burner until Stephany lit a fire under me one day and said, "Hey! We should still do this!" Hence, a new generation of the Photostars is born and I am thrilled to say that we had THE best turn out EVER at Photogen Inc Studios! These events are an open invitation to any and all photographers in the area. Experience level doesn't matter, your niche in the industry doesn't matter - all that matters is that you BRING the FUN!

I have this vision of putting MPLS - or the Midwest for that matter - on the map in the photo industry and let me tell you, we have some KILLER talent in this town!

We also have some killer looks...obviously!

FebMNPhotostarsblg-1.jpg

Thank you SO much to everyone who came out to the event! I foresee many of these in our future!

Unconditional Love!

As Valentines Day approaches, the big L.O.V.E. is on the minds of many! Despite if you celebrate the hallmark holiday or not, we can't deny this time of the year makes us reflect on the love that surrounds us! To me, I see the purest form of love every day from my dogs. Yes, the love me, but more importantly, they love and care for each other and their 'friends'. Yes, my dogs have friends. They have, over time, inherited three stuffed animals that are life-size to them and they looooove these stuffed animals unconditionally! Laugh all you want, it's totally true. They always have to be near by - and if they don't know where they are, they will surely go find them! They bathe them, cuddle them and sleep with them at night - these friends mean absolutely everything to my dogs.

Love is simple.

What is LOVE to you?

Lofty Goals

Seek the lofty by reading, hearing and seeing great work at some moment every day. ~Thornton Wilder

Lofty is the perfect word for me, and especially right now.

Many times I have people say to me, "Oh, Eliesa. You've done so much already and you're always doing something! What is next for you?" This is always immediately followed up by the question," And how do you keep going?"

This whole thing, my life, my business, etc. is all fueled by passion. I am passionate about doing big things. I'm not interested in being mediocre or okay - I am determined to be great. I am determined to be a legend. These are big words and I have set some extremely high expectations and lofty goals for myself, but I always have. I think there have been two keys to my success thus far. 1) Everything has come about and happened very organically and naturally for me. I have never tried to be anyone else but myself and I have stayed true to the art that I want to create. I have always put my efforts into projects that I believe in and I have not compromised anything to get to my dream. 2) I have always had momentum. I am constantly pushing myself - and those around me - to go out of our comfort zone and create things and chase our ideas to make them a reality. If you own a business and want to continue to do so for the next 30 years, you better not get comfortable. In fact, you better get UN-comfortable...the more, the better.

On the flip side, this past week, I was out to a little impromptu dinner with some fellow photographers and one of them said, " Sometimes I just hate being around you Eliesa, because you are so god damn motivated and that is just not me! It's exhausting...but deep down I suppose I need a little of that right now." She is absolutely right! You shouldn't feel like a horrible person if you are reading this and thinking, "But, I don't want to be a big deal. I just want to make photographs that make people happy and have my little happy business." Great, fabulous, lovely. Everyone has their own vision of how they want to impact this world and Oprah is no better than the volunteer in the soup kitchen.

However, my point for the whole post is to encourage all of you to do something that is uncomfortable for you and see where it takes you. Whether you are interested in photography and you've been putting off buying that camera  - do it. Maybe you want to quit your day job and pursue your passion as a full time career - do it. Maybe you feel like you need to do some soul searching and you really want to book that trip - do it. Sometimes in life, your best decisions are made as spontaneous ones. I guarantee you that by taking a big risk, you will be absolutely terrified, but I also guarantee that it won't be as scary as you think. You will have catapulted yourself into a situation that you simply can't fail at. Failure has never been an option for me, and big surprise...I've worked my ass off, but I have never failed myself.

IMG_3148_edit.jpg

You can thank my great friend Josh Elliott for this photo up above, which started me thinking about all of the above thoughts! This image was taken about a year ago when we were at a workshop together and I love it, because I am SO focused on whatever I am doing.

Passion. Truth. Momentum.

Don't get comfortable - ever.

The Hills!

There are two things that I absolutely love to be around. The mountains and the ocean. I think that is why I am so obsessed with Vancouver, because it has THE perfect balance of the two beauties! However, considering that Minnesota has a very flat terrain, the ocean and hills of California were a warm welcome to my soul! The Juddster traveled with me to Orange County, where I was the guest speaker at the first-ever JNP Workshop (more details to come in my next post)! We took some time to enjoy the sand, sun, almost 70 degree weather (which felt like a dream!)....and I got to indulge in my all-time-favorite treat, Pinkberry! We also had the opportunity to see some of our fabulous friends...yes, Cali was pretty much bliss!

Unpredictable

Half of the fun of shooting a wedding is getting to hang out with my crew! We never know what the weather is going to be like here in Minnesota, so a big part of our job - and a quality I pride myself on the most - is doing an amazing job of working-on-the-fly. Not only does it make creating more enjoyable for me, but I simply have SO much fun with my team on the day of a shoot! Honestly, we are really funny and we seriously...do need a reality show! ;0) A couple weeks ago, we photographed the McCullough's amazing wedding and here are just a handful of the awesome adventures we had:

1) Melissa surprised us with New Moon candy...I've never read any of the Twilight series, but she is a big fan! Regardless, the sugar was quite nice!

2) It was 9 degrees that day, which meant two things...One, I was wearing Under Armour beneath my clothes and two, we killed the brides flowers by being outside for 20 minutes! (Side note...we absolutely LOVE our clients, because they sacrifice a lot to create amazing images...:0)

3) We forgot our stand, so Brandon was the "Human Light Stand"

4) My crew shows tons of passion during the day...and a little bit of camaraderie as well! This collaboration between artists takes our creativity up 10 notches and I looooove it!

5) Since it's so cold here, I decided to have a glamour-shots moment with a heater...I was nice and toasty!

The point of this post is to show you all that crazy things will always happen on a wedding day and encourage photographers not to get stressed while shooting. Remember to have confidence in your craft...the best photographers can make magic out of the most blah of situations, rock it out and create some amazing images!

The Day That Collin Stopped By...

A few months ago, I kept hearing this chatter about a dude named Collin. My awesome friends/fellow photographers/kick-ass videographer kept raving about him and his work! I checked out his website and was blown away! We had dinner, he picked my brain, and the rest is history, we are instant friends! Collin is the perfect example of a person who absolutely loves what they do and is having a TON of fun doing it! He has a passion for photography, not just weddings (though he rocks those out like no ones business), but many other areas as well! I absolutely love meeting new, amazing talent in the MPLS and I couldn't be happier to have this guy around! Collin stopped by to visit us in the studio today to catch up! We also played with his super-yummy 35mm 1.4 lens, which I am dyyyyyyyyyying to get!

Make sure to check out Collin's Website and Blog!

The [Film] Book!!

WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!! I am SUPER excited to share with you all the launch of my first book!!

It's been on my goal list for a while now to create a coffee table book and it really started out as a personal project for myself. I am a huge believer in creating something with your images. When we live in an age of computers and iphones, every image seems to stay on a machine. I love prints, canvas, albums and - alas - books!  As I started talking about this project, I started noticing an interesting response...people actually wanted to see it! The [Film] Book features images from my film cameras over the last year. You all know how passionate I am about film, so this is very special to me! I also wanted to share my thoughts in the book so I chose to do so through quotes. I'm a big quote-girl, if you couldn't tell, and I thought there was no better way to inspire than to use references that you can take with you on a daily basis!

So, without further adieu...

I present to you... The [Film] Book

Cheers to 2010!

2009 has been an amazing year! Photogen Inc was busier than ever and I feel like I accomplished so much! We photographed some amazing weddings, knocked out some crazy cool editorial spreads and even got a new look! Brandon also spread his wings with Rivets and Rosesand we added Melissa, Tom and Ryan to the Photogen Inc. family!I feel like we have accomplished SO much, yet we are just beginning! There are SO many big things that I have in store and want to do that I also feel like I haven't even made a dent in my goal list! This year, I made my resolutions on my birthday instead of waiting until new years! I've already crossed some things off of that list and I am feeling better than ever about where this next year is going! With that said, my ultimate goal for 2010 is to give back. I've discovered that I have developed a real desire and passion to reach out and help other photographers and business owners! I absolutely love meeting and inspiring artists who want to take their work to the next level, so they can truly live the lifestyle they always wanted. It's much more than being a good technical shooter, editing techniques and having a fancy blog. It's ultimately more about you. I am thrilled to be guest speaking at the first-ever JNP Workshop at the end of January and I can't wait to bring the ROCK! (There are only a few spots left!) I also launched LOVEe Consults a month ago and so far it has received QUITE a big response! I am super excited to make this official and begin spreading the love!

This post isn't meant to be like, "Hey! Sign up for my one-on-one consults", but rather to push the blog reader who has been waiting to take the plunge! I read a quote in a book I'm currently reading that hits home: True vision leads to commitment rather than compliance, confidence rather than caution.

My challenge to all of you out there who have been making excuses, playing it safe and 'waiting for the right time' to make your dream come true is to STOP waiting. With this mentality, there is never going to be a perfect time. I challenge you to take the plunge - or even the little baby steps - to make your dreams come true. I GUARANTEE you that once you commit to those decisions, you will feel safe, determine and driven to make those visions a reality. Failure is not an option. You will succeed.

So, do it. Make yourself feel uncomfortable and you will accomplish more than you ever thought possible! It's not only the beginning of the new year, but also a new decade....there is no better time than NOW to live your dreams!

Yearbook Photos!

I took a trip down memory lane today with my friend Andy! Over a couple beers, we came up with this lovely little post for you all! Andy and I, obviously, grew up together and have experienced every single awkward phase there ever was together! I thought we were great friends...until I saw our third grade yearbook...the year he apparently had it out for me! Also...take note of the props my cat gave me for graduating high school....
